Anna Appleby

Last week I had the pleasure to interviewing the amazing Anna Appleby. Anna is currently undertaking a PHD which is in collaboration with Niall Campbell, a poet, in which she is composing an opera, Drought. Anna is also one of four female composers on Glyndebourne’s “Balancing the Score” scheme, a scheme where Glyndebourne supports four female composers in the world of opera.

On this episode Anna and I talk about her inspiration’s, her career so far, the opera she’s currently writing(!), some of the opportunities she has had and pieces she has written, as well as her recent foray into pop music with her alter-ego Norrisette. Anna also spoke about being a female composer as well her thoughts on representation. I want to thank Anna for this especially, as I don’t think it’s the sole work of a female or another typically ‘underrepresented’ composer to address the gap in programming works, it is on performers and programmers themselves.
